THE PASHA, MY MOTHER AND I

THE PASHA, MY MOTHER AND I

“I was raised by a Kurdish activist,” recounts filmmaker Nevine. For the last 40 years, her mother, Pervine Jamil, has run her Kurdish Bureau in Brussels. Her main activity—still today at the age of 80—is publishing a monthly newsletter, where she communicates about the Kurdish struggle around the world.

Nevine’s childhood was shaped by her mother’s dream of a free Kurdistan, which she inherited from her father, Ekrem Cemil Pasha, one of the founders of the modern Kurdish movement. His grandfather was a pasha in Diyarbakir, but after the fall of the Ottoman Empire, their family was betrayed and exiled by Atatürk. Pervine was raised in exile and dedicated her life to the Kurdish cause. Will she be the last in the family line to fight for their legacy, or will this burden fade with the filmmaker? Nevine’s dilemma intensifies when she gives birth, passing on the responsibility to a new generation.

The Pasha, My Mother and I is Nevine’s personal journey, revisiting her rich Kurdish family history with the help of her mother, Pervine.
“Ez ji aliyê çalakvaneke Kurd ve hatim mezinkirin.” dibêje fîlmsaz Nevine. Diya wê Perwîn Cemîl ev 40 sal in Buroya Kurdî ya Brukselê birêve dibe. Çalakiya sereke ya dayika wê ya 80 salî îro jî weşandina rojnameyeke mehane ye, ku tê de têkoşîna Kurdan radigihîne çar aliyê cîhanê.

Zarokatiya Nevîne bi xewna Kurdistana azad hatiye hûnandin, ku diya wê ji bavê xwe Ekrem Cemîl Paşa, yek ji damezrinêrên tevgera Kurdî ya nûjen, mîrat girtiye. Bapîrê wê paşayekî Diyarbekirê ye, lê piştî hilweşîna Împeratoriya Osmanî, malbata wan ji aliyê Ataturk ve tê sirgûn kirin. Perwîn li sirgûnê mezin dibe û jiyana xwe ji bo doza Kurdayetiyê terxan kir. Ma ew ê bibe kesê dawîn ku ji bo mîrata malbata xwe şer bike, an ev barê ser mile wê ewê bi derhêner re ji holê rabe? Dubendiya Nevîne dema anîna zarokekî kûr dibe, ku berpirsiyariyê bigihîne nifşê nû.

Paşa, Diya Min û Ez rêwîtiya şexsî ya Nevîne ye ku ew bi alîkariya diya xwe Pervînê dîroka dewlemend a malbatî ya Kurd ji nû ve dinirxîne
