Yezidian Voices / Dengên Êzîdiyan
The film follows three Yazidi survivors as they raise their voices and process the genocide they endured. Shireen was held captive by ISIS for seven years. She is a fighter, while her brother Aras, calm and steady, supports her in moments that are too overwhelming. Ziyad survived one of ISIS’s mass executions by sheer chance, watching his friends and cousins die before his eyes. For the first time, he shares his story in German. Throughout the film, the three protagonists grow stronger as they recount their stories with renewed confidence.

Talea Rullkötter grew up in multiple cultures and, as a young journalist, is eager to seek out stories that are worth being told and heard. Listening to Yazidi women, connecting the events of the past with the future, and reporting on strong people are her main motivations. Before starting her master’s in Television Journalism, she gained practical experience at KiKA and WDR Lokalzeit.

Jiwan Hasen studied Media and Communication Studies at the University of Damascus and Television Journalism at the University of Applied Sciences in Hanover. Before his master’s studies, he worked, among other places, at Syria Education TV. He has a personal connection to Kurdish culture and the region, as he comes from a Kurdish-Circassian clan that was subjected to persecution. Jiwan is also fluent in several Arabic and Kurdish dialects.

Clara Schillinger is a young journalist and filmmaker who, alongside her master’s studies at the University of Applied Sciences in Hanover, is passionate about raising awareness of social injustices. Prior to her studies, she worked at SWR-Marktcheck. In 2021, she became aware of the genocide against the Yazidis through the conviction of a former ISIS fighter.
